A wraparound kitchen extension,
Our challenge in this Victorian terraced house, was to transform a cramped and poorly laid out kitchen in to one far more suited to modern family living.
Victorian houses have long been a popular choice, their high ceilings and period features forming a large part of their appeal. But the generous proportions of the living and bedrooms are often tempered with smaller functional kitchens and separate dining rooms. Such was the problem impacting this family’s enjoyment of their home. What our client wanted was a large kitchen and dining space that the family could entertain in and enjoy together.
Our solution was to break away from the narrow cramped layout of the existing kitchen and create a wraparound extension. This meant we not only added length to the space but also some much needed width. By extending in to the side return we were also able to incorporate generous roof lights. These let in unobstructed natural light which bounces off the modern high-gloss units. To create immediate impact, we included bi-fold doors in to our design. Now our clients also have an enviable view of the garden and can open up the space on warmer days.
A decent amount of worktop space was important to this family so we ensured our layout maximised this. And as with any kitchen, sufficient storage is a must, so our design makes sure that there is a space for everything.
Our client was struggling with their lack of downstairs space in which to run the family home. Their existing kitchen was very small and the front connecting living rooms were being used as a playroom, dining room and office.
We created a design to give this family the space that they needed and rooms that had a more defined purpose. To do this we took advantage of the permitted development rights and extended the property out in to the ample garden. With the new extension we created an open plan kitchen diner which also incorporated the addition of a shower room. To deliver both impact and space we created a vaulted ceiling with generous roof lights and complemented these with large bi-fold doors. What has been achieved is a light and bright open-plan space with plenty of room for preparing meals and family living.
This new kitchen space is ideal for modern family living. Its innovative remodelling has created a contemporary room which is now bright and spacious. The integrated kitchen storage is future-proofed for a growing family and it is now a space to be enjoyed to the full.
“We can’t fault Ask My Architect who were professional and enthusiastic from start to finish. We absolutely love our new kitchen – it’s just perfect and has provided so much more preparation surface and storage!”
