Wraparound kitchen extension with open plan living and dining space
Winfrith Road, Putney
To completely change the existing ground floor layout of this end-of-terrace property in order to create a central light and spacious open-plan kitchen with a living and dining space opening on to the garden.
Previously this period property had a small kitchen that backed on to the garden, leaving the dining table located in the darkest area of the kitchen. What this growing family needed was more space and a light-filled family-friendly kitchen, living and dining area.
To make a truly positive impact on how this ground floor layout worked, we suggested taking advantage of the property’s end of terrace location by introducing a wrap-around extension. This created a new open plan space with a kitchen and island in the centre of the house and a living/dining area that opens on to the attractive outdoor space.
The added height of the new the extension gives a greater sense of space, whilst generous roof lights fill the kitchen with natural light and bi-fold doors provide a bright dining and living area. The transition between the interior and the exterior is made seamless by tiling the level floor throughout. This household’s feline member was not to be left out, therefore we also designed a bespoke catflap for easy access, so everyone can enjoy this fantastic new family space.
With the project completed just a few months before the arrival of the clients’ first child, this period property now makes the best use of its space. The new open-plan light-filled kitchen and living area transforms the property, providing a safe environment for a young family and a stylish enjoyable space to live and entertain friends.
We want to say how happy we are with the work that Ask My Architect have done, Brian and the team have done a fantastic job and made it so easy for us – we love our new open-plan ground floor and kitchen and have no hesitation in recommending them!
